🛠️ EOL Documents Tune-up

Updating your end-of-life documents doesn’t have to be a daunting project. Follow these three steps to clear the mental clutter and secure your peace of mind.

1. The Reality Check (Review)

Gather your existing documents. If you don’t have them yet, start a fresh folder. Ask yourself these three questions:

  • People: Are my designated Power of Attorney and Medical Proxy still the person(s) I want making decisions for me?
  • Life Changes: Have I moved, married, divorced, or had children since my last update?
  • Health Changes: Does my Advanced (Medical) Directive still reflect my end-of-life care and final arrangements wishes?
  • Assets: Have I opened new accounts, cashed out investments, or sold property that needs to be addressed in my Will?

2. The Conversation (Communicate)

Documents are only effective if people know they exist.

  • Inform your inner circle: Tell your Agent or Executor where your documents are kept.
  • Discuss the “Why”: Briefly explain your Final Care Wishes so there is no confusion during emotional moments.

3. The Seal of Approval (Finalize)

An unsigned document is a powerless piece of paper.

  • Check State Requirements: Does your state require a Notary or specific witnesses for your Power of Attorney?
  • Digital & Physical Backups: Keep a physical copy in a fireproof safe and a digital copy in a secure cloud folder shared with your trusted representative.
